Journal Entry number one..Nairobi

  March 6th 2008

The beauty of children…although I myself am not ready to have children of my own, today was such an eye opener on how precious life is. I was able to go to an orphanage today with babies who are affected by H.I.V. It was life changing to see these young babies who range from infants (as young as one month) to toddlers who have been left behind because either their mother died at birth or there family cannot take care of them because they have H.I.V. I looked at these adorable babies and thought to myself that at such a young age why do they have to suffer? I learned today that with the proper nutrition and care these babies can fight the disease and live longer as long as their immune system is strong. Touch is very important, these babies need to be held in order to survive. I believe that touch is so important but only when there is trust….I love hugging my friends and I love to cuddle with that person I am intimate with. Many people deny themselves of this feeling but after today I understand why it’s so important in life.

The energy of children is spectacular! I got a chance to play with the school kids at the campus I am staying at and to be honest I’M WIPED! I thought I had a lot of energy but these kids out numbered me and I totally met my match. It reminded me how keeping your youth is so important. This is why you should surround yourself with kids and feed off their energy. I never understood why people didn’t like kids…I’m guessing that they didn’t like themselves to much as a child.

An interesting thing happened today which showed me the difference between North American culture and African culture. A little girl about 4 years old came to me and said “Look at my muscles” and she flexed for me. I was so amazed and said “Wow they are big”. In the African culture women thrive on being strong and fit which is everything I teach. In North america women (I find) are more concerned about being skinny and having flat stomachs. I don’t think I have ever heard a little girl say to me “Look at my muscles” I found this interesting and it made me smile…..there is hope for our women of the future.

Kilimanjaro

img_0287.jpgOn March 13th at 6:20am I successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro the highest in Africa to Uhuru Peak 5895m amsl. That was one of the best days of my life and I also the most rewarding challenge of my life.

I was the strongest I have ever been in my entire life both mentally and physically. It was so cold up there and I had not slept the night before. When I felt I couldn’t go any further I thought of why I was doing this and what a breast cancer survivor has to overcome and I knew in my heart I had to finish. When I got to the top I couldn’t forget about my tiara and boa…and yes folks….I did…..I brought my Tiara and boa to the top and I released my inner queen and diva!!!!

Thank you for all the positive energy. I felt it while I was up there.

Carmen’s March Sexy Tip

carmen-extreme-cropped.jpg
Carmen Puyo
“Sexy is not a look it’s an attitude”.  This is the mantra by which I live my life.  This week I will be accomplishing a goal which I set for myself two years ago. I am climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
I totally believe that sexy is much more than your physical appearance. The accomplishments that you set for yourself and attain are sexy. There is nothing sexier than a woman who does what she says she’s going to do. Write your dreams and your goals down, look at them, then do them.
Thank you
I would like to thank everyone for their support and inspiring words during my journey to this monumental trip of a lifetime. All of you will be in my heart and mind. Please send me your positive vibes during the week of March 8th-15th this will be the week I’ll be on that mountain…GO KILI!
I would also like to take this time to thank my partner in crime Dr. Blessyl Buan. Her hard work and support through my personal journey has been overwhelming. I am truly blessed to be able to work with such a strong minded individual who has a heart of gold. Let’s wish her all the best with her own personal journey as she prepares to take on the biggest and most respected challenge…to be a mother.

Dr. Blessyl’s March Confidence Tip

“To Do” Lists don’t have to be your enemy

   blessyl-35-x-4-headshot.jpg

Dr. Blessyl Buan, DC

Now that I am on maternity leave, I have MORE to “To Do” lists than I did before….I didn’t think that it was truly possible. Being overwhelmed can really shoot down your sense of confidence and panic can set in.

One way to alleviate your stress is to write multiple lists.  Realize that we do not live in a bubble free from life’s interruptions.  Really long lists can be divided into four headings:

  1. What I absolutely must do today
  2. What I must do this week
  3. Short term goals (within the month)
  4. Long term goals (within the year and beyond)

By prioritizing your tasks, you will place value on what you’ve accomplished.  So if you only ticked off 3 items out of 25, you will still feel productive.

And remember, you still have tomorrow.
